Strategic Planning

NVUSD developed a community-driven vision and plan.

In the 2023–2024 school year, Napa Valley Unified School District developed and the Board of Trustees approved a community-driven vision called Vision 2040. This vision established long-term aspirations that fundamentally shift our promise to students regarding what they will know and be able to do, how adults will be supported to grow, and how our systems will transform to make learning more relevant, engaging, flexible, and equitable. These aspirations are outlined in our Graduate Portrait, Adult Portrait, and System Portrait. (See Vision 2040.)

Transforming Our Future Together, our 2024–2029 strategic plan, is the first in a series of multi-year plans outlining the important steps we will take toward realizing Vision 2040. It is built upon the strong foundation we created through our 2019–2024 strategic plan. Through focus, alignment, and coherence of efforts, we built robust communication systems, proactively strengthened our financial and asset management systems, strengthened employee relationships and inclusive practices, and prioritized strategic and impactful governance and policy implementation.

In 2024-2029, we will work on 15 strategies within four theme areas that are foundational to Vision 2040.

2023-2024 Events and Process Timeline

August/September Needs Finding Surveys

The needs finding survey is an opportunity for our community to provide feedback as we continue to reimagine education within NVUSD.

September 12 Board Mini SessionThe Board of Trustees will meet the evening prior to the Student Summit to get a strong understanding of what the Summit will be like for the nearly 300 middle and high school students invited to attend.

September 13 Student Summit

The Student Summit will bring in 30 students from every TK-8, Middle, and High School to imagine what their school experience can look like. Through a series of activities, feedback will be compiled that will help us develop a graduate portrait. The graduate portrait for NVUSD will be based on what the community wants to be true for its students—what do students need to know, be, and be able to do--by the time they graduate.

October 6 & 7 Guiding Coalition #1The Guiding Coalition is our visioning steering committee, tasked with contributing ideas, perspectives, expertise, and experience that will inform the creation of the district’s long-term vision, through a series of three design sessions. These sessions will include explorations of the future of Napa Valley Unified School District, and the connected needs of NVUSD’s students, schools, and educators. This group will meet over three, 1.5-day meetings in October, December, and February.

January 8-21 Community Engagement Sessions

During this second series of Community Engagement Sessions, NVUSD will host a variety of sessions for parents, students, staff and other community members. At these events, we will be sharing prototypes of the Graduate Portrait, Adult Portrait and System Portrait and ask the community for feedback. These drafts were created collaboratively by the NVUSD Strategic Vision Guiding Coalition after reviewing thousands of inputs from the community, learning from other initiatives and examples around the world, and researching the needs of people and the workplace in the future. Inputs from the community were collected through a variety of methods, including:

  • Inputs from over 300 students who attended the Student Summit

  • NVUSD parent, teacher, and special education committee meetings

  • Five meetings at NVUSD’s Family Resource Centers

  • Two large-scale Community-wide Open Houses

  • NVUSD staff meetings

  • Our online survey, and more.
